The Shaping is the process of drawing essence from the Immaterium and shaping it to affect the world. The process has five steps: Piercing, Drawing, Shaping, Purging, and Sealing.
Piercing is the first step and the user must puncture a hole in the Veil around them for the essence to flow. Drawing is the process of taking in the raw essence of the Immaterium into the user’s mind and body. This is a risky step as taking too much can cause irreversible damage to the user. Shaping is the process of giving form and intention to the raw essence held by the user. Purging is the dual process of sending the shaped essence to the target and purging any excess essence back into the Immaterium. The fifth step, Sealing, involves closing the hole created in the Veil to prevent essence from leaking into Errai.
During long sustained use of magic, users will often shortcut the process. They pierce the Veil once and then use the same opening to draw essence, thus only perform steps two through four until the need is over. Then they will seal the opening. Often the users will not purge themselves of the unspent essence in order to use it later. This shortcut is much quicker, but has risks. Without purging themselves of the raw unshaped essence, they risk being adversely affected by the raw chaotic power held inside. Not closing the Veil opening each time can cause it to grow as more essence is drawn. If the user is killed, the opening may be left unchecked and overtime grow to affect Errai drastically. Other users can seal any opening they find with some effort, but the risk of uncontrolled essence leakage is still great.
